When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.”
Exodus 3:4 (NASB)
I am reminded of an old gospel song “People Get Ready” about the gospel train taking the saints to Heaven – it was written by Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions in 1965. Our verse today is the beginning of a message from God to Moses, for him to get ready for the task ahead. Being ready for God’s call to serve has been a necessity in my walk with Him over the years. I can’t say I have always been ready; I am only human after all. It is not only readiness for Heaven, but also being ready to hear how we can serve God each day. To hear Him we need to listen, which means we need to be quiet. So often our prayer life is a one-way street, with all the traffic of our requests made to God.
We can learn from Moses – he simply answered God “Here I am.” Even young Samuel eventually learned to answer God’s call in this manner, showing his readiness to hear the Almighty further (1 Samuel 3:10). Moses was not keen on what God required of him, but he obeyed Him regardless. When God calls on us, it may not be some grand task, but instead a menial one requiring some humility.
Dear reader, are you ready to hear from God? Rarely will it be a thundering from Heaven, but more likely via a prayer, a reading, or the words of another individual. Be ready for God when He calls, and simply say “Here I am.”
