One of the things that is really key to learning to be a Disciple of Jesus Christ is learning to be Led instead of just directed by the Holy Spirit.
As a young believer, I used to think that those two things were the same application, only differently worded. Now I have come to realize that they are totally different things in the Natural realm as well as the Spirit realm.
If you’re being directed, you can go it alone on your journey, but being Led involves the One Who Is Leading You! In order to be Led by another, it involves that Other Individual grabbing you by the hand and going before you almost as if you were blindfolded.
“For as many as are LED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD, THEY ARE THE SONS OF GOD.” Romans 8:14
If the Holy Spirit is leading you, then He will not only deal with whatever is put in your path by the enemy, but He will also tell you where to put your feet and where not to put them.
There are times when you will Run the Race, but there are also times when you’ll be traversing the minefields of the enemy. But every minefield is traversable if you are following the Footsteps of the One Who knows where the enemy has placed all of the mines!
“I will go before you and level the mountains [to make the crooked places straight]; I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut asunder the bars of iron.” Isaiah 45:2
Many of us have tried the directed version of the Christian Life, and while we were on our way to wherever we heard the Lord tell us to go, we stepped right into the snares the enemy placed in our paths ahead of us.
However, if The Holy Spirit goes ahead of us and with us (leading us), He will expose everything that the enemy has attempted to place in our path to trip us up, slow us down, or just stop us altogether!
“But when He, the Spirit of Truth (the Truth-giving Spirit) comes, HE WILL GUIDE YOU INTO ALL THE TRUTH (the whole, full Truth). For He will not speak His own message [on His own authority]; but He will tell whatever He hears [from the Father; He will give the message that has been given to Him], and He will announce and declare to you the things that are to come [that will happen in the future].” John 16:13
“For by what shall it be known that I and Your people have found favor in Your sight? Is it not in Your going with us so that we are distinguished, I and Your people, from all the other people upon the face of the earth?” Exodus 33:16
What makes us different than everyone else on the planet isn’t that we’re more special; it’s the One Who has Saved Us and is Leading Us!
While being directed gives us a certain level of personal autonomy in the Spirit realm, it also leaves us completely exposed to the enemy’s plans, but if I am being led by the Holy Spirit every step of the Way, then I am Surrounded by the Angel of the Lord during the journey (Psalms 34:7).
Learn to be Led by the Holy Spirit! Wait on the Lord to take you by the Hand and join you upon this journey. If you do, you won’t regret it!
