For my father and my mother have forsaken me,
But the LORD will take me up.
Psalm 27:10 (NASB)
Today’s verse continues the theme of God’s care for His children who obey Him; David highlights the constancy of God’s love in this verse. He contrasts his earthly parents with His Heavenly Father. It is not to be understood that David’s parents have deserted him, but rather that this psalm is written by an old David, after his parents have themselves died and cannot thus care for him on earth – but Father God can.
Throughout this psalm, there are several references to God lifting up His servant; here we have one in the last phrase of this verse: “the LORD will take me up.” This is the constancy of God’s care in times of trials, such as we read of David when Saul pursued him; He protects His own and lifts them beyond the reach of their persecutors.
Dear Reader, as well as being restricted by mortality, some parents can be less than loving to their children, and may be deliberately cruel. In either circumstance, our Father God is constantly in our lives; He seeks our care and always listens for our prayers of need. Just as David was, we can be confident in our Heavenly Father each day.
For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
Romans 8:15
