A Prayer for Strength and Healing When Life Hurts

I made up my mind to turn to Jesus every time uncertainty threatened to derail my trust.

The Queen Anne’s Lace stands in full bloom—sprinkling the fields with flourishes of ivory.  Admiring it from the window, I remember walking through rolling fields of wildflowers as a teen.  Wild places helped me forget about my cares, and I felt fully alive and healed.  Going to the woods still heals me.  Walking beneath open skies feels like a silent prayer for strength and healing from the wounds of the world.

Not long ago, I slipped into the woods on a balmy evening. As I gazed into the murky creek water, I assessed the state of my soul and realized I was wrestling with uncertainty.

The creek bottom exhaled the pungent scent of decaying earth, and I immediately sensed an invitation: Anyone can declare trust in God when life’s going well, but it takes faith to declare our trust when life feels uncertain.

A Powerful Prayer for Strength and Healing:

“Lord, I trust you—even when I don’t understand what you are doing,” I whispered.

Almost immediately, I sensed a shift in my soul.  I remembered a different season of declaring my trust amid uncertainty, and I reminded myself of God’s faithfulness in the past.  I was flooded with hope and strength.

As you read these words, you might be facing a battle with uncertainty as well.  You might fear an uncertain future, or maybe you’re overwhelmed by the pain of a broken heart.  Perhaps you feel weak and alone.  I encourage you to join me in praying this prayer for strength and healing:

“Lord, I trust you—even when I don’t understand what you are doing.”

This simple prayer holds the capacity to change the way you see your pain.  When you trust that God is sovereign over your circumstances, you will find the strength to keep pressing forward, knowing that he is capable of working all things for your good and his glory.  Professing your trust will push out your fear, and pushing out the fear is a gateway to healing.

Before leaving the woods that muggy evening, I made up my mind to turn to Jesus every time uncertainty threatened to derail my trust.  In the days that followed, I turned to Jesus when circumstances continued to feel confusing.  I turned to him when I was disappointed, hurt, and rejected.  And one day at a time, he proved himself trustworthy.

As you continue to trust God for strength and healing, here are four ways to run to him in your painful moments.

How to Turn to Jesus for Healing

1. Worship in song.

Find a playlist, turn on a Christian radio station, or sing your favorite praise song.  Imagine Jesus seated on the throne above every ruler and authority.  As you worship him, give him glory and honor as you declare your desire to trust him—even when you don’t understand his ways.

2. Read a Psalm.

The Psalms are filled with heartfelt cries from God’s children.  Connect with God’s heart as you slowly read through a Psalm.  Ask God to illuminate any part of the Psalm that is particularly relevant to you.  Write it down.  Meditate on it.  Talk to God about it.  Ask him what he wants you to know about his life-giving Word, and he will show you.

3. Pour your heart out to him.

Turn to Jesus by telling him how you feel.  Share every detail.  Ask questions.  He is waiting to commune with you, and this kind of prayer can be deeply cleansing.

4. Claim a verse and repeat it.

Search for a Bible verse that speaks to your situation.  Write it down, and commit it to memory.  Every time you feel fearful, overwhelmed, or worn out, repeat your verse.  Practice standing on the Truth instead of standing on your feelings.
