But now, O LORD, You are our Father,
We are the clay, and You our potter;
And all of us are the work of Your hand.
Isaiah 64:8 (NASB)
We sometimes make bad decisions in life; ‘we can’t see the wood for the trees’ as the saying goes. These may be small or big decisions. It is good to recognize such hard decisions early and seek wise counsel from trusted confidants – I have had to do this recently, and thank God for those who help me in such situations. It is often necessary to simplify things by going back to the beginning; this is what Isaiah does in today’s verse as he advocates/petitions for Israel who had forsaken their God.
Isaiah begins chapter 64 with one of the most heartfelt prayers of the Bible: “Oh, that You would tear open the heavens and come down, that the mountains would quake at Your presence.” What a powerful prayer that is dear reader; as I meditated on his plea, it occurred to me that this would be a fitting prayer today for our nations – if only the streets of Britain quaked with the presence of Almighty God rather than rioting! He is a just and loving Father who seeks blessings for His children, in His own timing (1 Cor. 2:9) – this is His plan for us.
Dear Reader, the verse by Isaiah tells us that our Father God is our Potter – our life is completely in His hands. We are totally dependent upon His grace every day; this is our starting point for all decisions. May we seek Him humbly and fervently today.
