Then the people of all the earth came to Egypt to buy grain from Joseph, because the famine was severe in all the earth.
Genesis 41:57
In this final verse of Genesis 41, we read of the fruit of God’s plan, in that it drew many people from the nations and specifically the Israelites, all seeking food. As I pondered this verse it occurred to me that God cast His plan as a fisherman casts a net; they both fish for a specific catch but often catch other fish too. I have seen this happen in the past with evangelistic missions in Fife over the years.
I remember one in particular in the central Fife town of Cowdenbeath in 1985 by English evangelist Dick Saunders and his cathedral tent – “The Way To Life Crusade.” At this time the surrounding communities of Cowdenbeath were in economic and spiritual famine. The Crusade was brought to Fife by a dear brother who was the minister of a local church; he was awakened in the night and the Lord showed him a vision of the empty fields filled with hundreds of people streaming to a tent to hear the gospel. Through months of prayer and planning by local churches, it came to fruition and drew thousands of people from all over central Scotland during a week of mission, and many hungry souls were fed with the Gospel, and saved.
Dear Reader, just as news of food drew many from the surrounding regions of Egypt, the Word of God active in a home, church or town will also draw people in need of feeding. Both the Biblical story of Joseph and that of the Central Fife Crusade were only possible through the faithful service of God’s people. Here is my challenge for you today; will you be a Joseph to feed hungry souls in the spiritual famine in our world today? You only need to be available and obedient to God – He will do the rest.
