Lift up your eyes on high
And see who has created these stars,
The One who leads forth their host by number,
He calls them all by name;
Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power,
Not one of them is missing.
Isaiah 40:26 (NASB1995)
Recently, I went for my regular evening prayer walk. I say prayer walk because I find walking in the hills and woodlands a most suitable place to commune with God; it brings great peace to my heart. I was walking along a different path, looking down at the verge and the tracks left by dogs and wildlife, when a wee voice spoke (inaudibly) in my spirit: “Look up, Alan, you never know what you’re missing!” Shortly after this, as I scanned the trees ahead, I saw the distinctive plumage of a Great Spotted Woodpecker. I stopped and looked closely as it disappeared into a hole in the trunk of a tree about thirty feet up, and then I heard the unmistakable sound of chicks who were frantic to be fed. As I waited patiently, I saw both male and female doing the supper time feeding – what a beautiful sight it was.
I remembered the beckoning of the Spirit for me to look upwards; I am glad of that valuable lesson. I despair when I see folk walking around with their head down in a mobile phone screen, when they may be blessed in God’s Creation. I was drawn to our scripture today, which encourages us to “lift up your eyes on high” on a starlit evening – the magnitude of the starlit heavens are a witness of their Creator God – He is our God too.
Dear Reader, take some time today to look upwards, seeking a sight that reminds you of your Father God. His Creation is awesome, and His blessings are many for those who seek Him.
