And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. Mark 3:25
Division always breaks something down to something in two or more smaller parts. The smaller something gets, the less it is able to accomplish. Most things will fall apart when divided, making them useless and unable to do what they were originally meant to do. Unity of parts is required in order for an object to hold together and function correctly. This proves true no matter what the object is, whether it is a living being or a non-living object.
Matthew records that as the scribes accused Jesus of having a demon, Jesus says, that a house divided against itself cannot stand.
Throughout history, there have been nations that became divided. One part of the nation would follow a certain line of government structure, while the other part of the nation would follow another style of government structure. Sometimes there would be more than two structures followed. As a result, the nation would begin to crumble and not be able to function smoothly.
This principle of division can occur in the life of an individual. People are often divided in their own hearts and minds following two different ways to live. Hearts desire to please people and the world, while at the same time wanting to please God. Or they desire to take a part in the ways of the world while claiming to live for God on Sundays.
As a result, the heart is divided and will fall. People who are living one foot in the world and one foot with God will be cast out by God as divided.
Instead of being divided in the heart, the believer is to be completely sold out to God in heart, soul, mind, and strength. There is to be no division or space given to the devil in one’s heart.
Every object you have must have all the working parts working in unity together in order for them to work properly. If one part stops working, the object stops functioning. This is the same with your life.
Do you find yourself choosing to live like the world throughout the week while choosing to live God’s way on Sunday? This is a sign of a divided house. Choose to make your house–your life–one that is in unity with God. Live completely for God and do not allow yourself to be divided by the ways of this world.
Today I pray that you will know Jesus as your Lord and Savior; that you will know how God desires you to live your life; that you will not follow the ways of the world; and that your heart will not be divided, but true to God.
