If there is anything that my husband and I have learned after spending over thirty years as ministers/missionaries that have no guaranteed salary or benefits from a natural source (a weekly paycheck or salary from a job)— it is that no matter if we are in abundance or lack…we cannot out give God! We have the guaranteed promise and benefit that God will provide and He always has.
Recently we found ourselves in a season of what some would call lack or “lack of abundance.” It has been many years since we have been in this kind of season so we have had to re-adjust our faith to a greater level of trust and peace once again. I believe that God allows these times to align our lives to live according to His promises and leading. It is forcing us to remember the miracles of years gone by and to posture our hearts and minds in peace.
While we’ve been in this season, we simultaneously found ourselves surrounded by those in greater need than us. We also had numerous things happen that were requiring unexpected large amounts of money that were unavoidable. We had a choice— do we turn away from the needs of others due to our circumstances or do we once again go before the Lord and seek His wisdom? Naturally, we stopped and sought the Lord.
His response to us was, “I am not limited and I am your source, therefore, you are not limited. You cannot out give Me. Give and it will be given to you— in abundance!”
Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.” Luke 6:38
So we gave out of our own need and almost immediately we had some of our unexpected needs provided for without asking any man. Luke 6:38 is not only about finances— it includes giving mercy, forgiveness, kindness, and help to those around us. We sometimes give our time when time feels so limited, we pray when we desire sleep, we forgive when we feel betrayed… and on and on it goes. We cannot out give God!
We need His wisdom and guidance in all things but I am continually overwhelmed by the measure of His compassion and mercy to mankind. After all, the Father gave His Son and Jesus gave His life— who can give more than that?
If you are in a season of need… in any of the areas mentioned… give! Seek Him knowing that He is waiting to pour into your lap an abundance of running-over blessings. He is so good and kind to us.
No one has ever become poor by giving.” – Anne Frank
