Have you ever felt like God was ghosting you? Like those times when you go on a date, everything seems perfect, but then—nothing. No calls, no texts, no DMs. You’re left questioning everything, replaying each moment in your head, seeking answers for the silence. This experience of being ghosted can be deeply unsettling, especially when it feels like God is the one doing the ghosting.
Sometimes, God feels like a constant conversationalist, and other times, more like a silent observer. You might think you’ve heard God’s promise or direction, but then all you encounter is silence. It’s not just you—many of God’s faithful servants have experienced His silence. Consider Abraham, who waited over 20 years to see God’s promise fulfilled, or Job, who endured tremendous trials. Their stories remind us that silence doesn’t equal absence.
So, what do you do when God seems silent? How do you cope with the spiritual version of being ghosted?
Revisit His Words:
When God seems silent, dive into His word. The Bible, written across centuries by various authors, still holds messages for you. It’s like a flashback scene in a movie, providing essential insights for what’s to come. While you may not find a direct answer to your specific query, you embark on a journey that teaches you what you truly need.
Retrace Your Steps to the Last Encounter:
Just as you would retrace your steps to find lost keys, do the same in your spiritual walk. Where were you when you last felt God’s presence? What were you reading or praying about? If God gave you a direction, persist in it. It’s not mere busy work; it’s about staying faithful while God prepares your next step.
Understanding the Role of the Holy Spirit:
The Holy Spirit, described in Acts as empowering the disciples to spread the Gospel, also works within us. But there are times we might feel ‘Holy Ghosted.’ It’s not that the Spirit has left us; perhaps we’re just struggling to hear His voice through our mental fog. In these moments, leaning on spiritually mature believers can be invaluable. They can act as conduits, providing clarity and guidance.
Embracing the Silence:
Sometimes, God’s silence might mean He’s already given you all the answers you need, or He’s listening, or actively working on your behalf. Remember, just because we can’t feel or see God, doesn’t mean He isn’t there. God’s nature is infinite, beyond our full comprehension.
Experiencing God’s silence can be challenging, but it’s also an invitation to deepen our faith. It’s a call to trust in His presence, even when He feels absent. God’s silence isn’t ghosting; it’s an opportunity for us to pursue Him with renewed fervor, trusting that He is always at work, even in the quiet. Let’s embrace these silent moments not as times of abandonment, but as periods of growth, faith, and deepening trust in the One who loves us infinitely.
