The Acacia Tree

My curses, my sins, my punishment, violently thrust upon him so I can be called the daughter of God.

The acacia tree is mentioned 29 times in the Bible. It appears in Exodus, Joshua, Deuteronomy, Isaiah, and Joel.

As I am studying the book of Joshua, I note that two men were sent out from the Acacia Grove to spy on the land of Jericho.

God was very specific.

It wasn’t “sent out of the field” or “out of the trees.”

It was said with intention…

“out of the Acacia Grove.”

God has a reason.

He always has a reason.

It’s my job to search it out.

So, I start researching the Acacia tree in scripture.

  • This tree was used to build the supporting structure of the ark.
  • This tree was used to build the arc of the covenant. (Exodus 25:10)
  • This tree was used for the poles for the table (Exodus 25:28); the beams for the Mishkan (Exodus 26:15) and the screen (Exodus 26:37); the altar (Exodus 27:1); and the poles for the altar (Exodus 27:6)
  • This tree was used to build the Tabernacle. The Bible shares that the entrance to the tent would have a curtain with gold hooks and five posts of acacia wood overlaid with gold.

Those are just a few.

This tree appears over and over in scripture.

But why?

What is God showing us?

When I googled images of the tree, I stared silently in shock at what I saw.

The thorns.

My computer keyboard flooded with tears. I wasn’t prepared to see the thorns. I didn’t realize THIS was the reason for the tree appearing so often in scripture.

Throughout time, the jujube tree and items made from jujube wood have been associated with the Crown of Thorns.

I don’t agree.

I believe God told us exactly what the crown was made from several times in scripture.

Those thorns.

Those awful, horrific thorns.

The crown of shame.

It was here the whole time.

The depth of what was done for us is woven throughout the entire Bible.

The shameful crown of infidelity worn by our sinless Savior.

He did this.

He wore this.

For us.

For me.

My curses, my sins, my punishment, violently thrust upon him so I can be called the daughter of God.

There are no adequate words for that kind of love.

There’s nothing I can say other than, “Here’s my life, Lord.”

He loves us.

He loves me.

I’m completely undone.

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter.

It is the honor of God’s children to seek it out.
