Physician

I find it very interesting that one of Paul’s disciples was a Physician, Luke.

Do you know Jesus as your Great Physician?  I was asked that question many years ago that set me on a course of wanting to discover the answer.  Here’s what I learned:

Part of our redemption is Divine health.   One of the Old Testament verses is, “By His stripes, we are healed.”  Isaiah 53: 5 One commentary that helped me to understand better about Jesus being our physician is this comment:  “God has both aspects of healing in view, and both our physical and spiritual healing is provided for by the suffering of Jesus.”  Guzik

One aspect of physical healing is documented within this verse:  “…They brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and He cast out the spirits with His word and healed all that were sick.” Matthew 8: 16

Spiritual healing is shown within this verse:  “His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes we were healed. For we were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd…” 1 Peter 2: 24-25

There are many scriptures and stories where Jesus healed the sick.  One use of the word Physician is “healer.”  Jesus can heal anything!  He can heal a wounded heart and a wounded spirit.  He can change the outcome of a diagnosis.  He can make the sick person well.

Where do you need healing today?

Call on His name; He is listening. “He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds.”  Psalm 147: 3

We have this promise:  “I am the one who…heals; no one can be rescued from my powerful hand!”  Deuteronomy 32: 39   “I am the LORD who heals you.” Exodus 15: 26

I find it very interesting that one of Paul’s disciples was a Physician, Luke. Paul referred to him as the “Beloved Physician.”  Colossians 4: 14

As a follower of Jesus, he walked in the footsteps of his “Beloved Jesus” our Great Physician. God has given men the ability to practice medicine, to aid in the healing of mankind. For that, I am very grateful for every doctor, nurse, paramedic, etc. who God has gifted to help mankind while here on the earth.

I worked in the medical field for many years and have seen many miracles that were done by the hands of God, through the hands of man, and through the power of prayer. As co-laborers with Christ, medicine is still being used to co-labor with the healing process for many. As His followers, we are the hands and feet of Jesus.

Does God need our help? No, He doesn’t, but He chooses for us to come alongside Him, just like Paul and Luke came alongside one another in ministry.

He chooses to live and move through human beings.  “For it is in Him, we live, and move and have our being.”  Acts 17: 28

We are told to “Lay our hands on the sick and they shall recover.”  Mark 16: 18 Be bold and start praying for those who are sick and see what God does!

In summary, “We are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.”  1 Corinthians 3: 9

Whatever field you are in, work in service to God as you move and live in Him, by His Spirit, to build His kingdom.
