Nothing Is Impossible When Mary Poppins Returns

Though it retains the authenticity of the first Mary Poppins film, Mary Poppins Returns takes viewers on all-new adventures with the next generation.

The wind blew in $23.5 million during the national debut weekend for Mary Poppins Returns, totaling $99.2 million by the end of December 2018. It may have fallen shy of Aquaman at the Box Office, but there are plenty of other reasons it’s soaring across the charts.

Though it retains the authenticity of the first Mary Poppins film, Mary Poppins Returns takes viewers on all-new adventures with the next generation of Banks children. In the opening scenes, Michael’s three young offspring, Anabel, John, and Georgie, are carrying adult responsibilities after the loss of their mother the year prior. Furthermore, the childhood home of both Michael and Jane is set to be repossessed, leaving the Banks family hopeless once they realize they have no money left to save it.

When Mary Poppins flies on the scene, however, she turns the grim situation topsy-turvy. From swimming in the depths of a bathtub with sea creatures to riding along the edges of the ceramic bowl, the mysterious and magical nanny shows the children that miracles can happen.

“Everything is possible,” states Anabel.

“Even the impossible,” Mary Poppins confirms.

If we all stick together, seek out the best in one another, and find our inner children, nothing can stop us from conquering fears and obstacles.

With catchy, unique songs and inspired choreography, Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda steal the spotlight as the leading lady and gentleman. Blunt’s quick wit, endless imagination, and charming sensibility bring a nostalgic taste to the screen in reflection of Julie Andrews’ stunning performance back in 1964. However, her poise and impeccable talent give the film a refreshing originality.

This Disney production is rated PG for mild innuendos and climactic thrills that deliver amusement with a spoonful of sugar.
