Navigating Unfamiliar Territory

Having the Life of God living inside of you gives you the anticipation for the journey and the excitement to participate in what God is asking you to do.

Fear of the unknown is often a driving force to keep the Body of Christ complacent and inactive. Not knowing what is just around the bend can oftentimes be exciting for some but very fearful for others.

I have driven the same road home every day for years, but there is a section of this road that has several spots where you can’t see over the humps or around the corners very well. I can always tell just by the way someone is driving in front of me whether they live nearby or not, or if they’re from out of town, because of how they drive in this part of the road.

Those familiar with these spots in the road don’t even slow down because they know exactly how fast they can go and still make it around the corners without winding up in one of the fields, while those who are not familiar and can’t see they slow way down because it’s unfamiliar territory.

This is sometimes the way we act upon our spiritual journey with the Holy Spirit. He will often take us on journeys into unfamiliar territory where we don’t know the Way to go. New things and change can become challenging for some of us as we tend to settle into comfortable routines for ourselves. But as we venture out into those areas that the Holy Spirit has prompted us, they will become easier to travel the more familiar we become with the Way (Jesus Christ).

We get accustomed to the random alterations of the Holy Spirit and even look forward to those adventures at that point. Some of us even get to the point where we are so used to the Holy Spirit’s leading that when He tells us to step out in faith, we don’t even slow down on the corners anymore. We have come to know the Way that we’re going was orchestrated by Him!

When Jesus was preparing to leave this planet and go back to the Father, His disciples were rather disgruntled about it. Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the Way?” And Jesus said to him, “I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life no man comes to the Father except by Me.” John 14:5-6

Knowing the Way doesn’t necessarily give you a roadmap, but it does give you a general direction. Knowing the Truth removes the fear of the journey itself and provides us with a handy map for the Journey. But having the Life of God Living inside of you gives you the anticipation for the Journey and the excitement to participate in what God is asking you to do.

“And if (since) we [positively] know that He listens to us in whatever we ask, we also know [with settled and absolute knowledge] that we have [granted us as our present possessions] the requests made of Him.” 1 John 5:15

Even though the disciples were anxious when Jesus said He was leaving them, He gave them the Holy Spirit to continue their journey ahead with confidence and the ability (Grace) to take the risks that the Lord was asking them to. It’s time for you to do so as well!

Cast off the fear and get excited about this journey that the Holy Spirit is taking you on. As you step out of your comfort zone, expect incredible things to happen as you travel the road ahead!

The more familiar it becomes, the less apprehensive you will be. Trust Him, for He has gone before you, leveled the mountains, and made all of the crooked places straight for you! It’s time to go!
