When we think of obedience, we usually think of children obeying their parents. But obeying God is even more important.
Deuteronomy 27:10 says, Thou shalt therefore obey the voice of the LORD thy God, and do his commandments and his statutes, which I command thee this day.
Do our children see us readily obeying God?
Acts 5:29 stresses the importance of obeying God rather than man, yet we often allow the world to negatively influence our obedience to God.
Jesus gives us a great example of obedience in Luke 2:48-50. Even when He was young, He knew His Father’s purpose for Him and set about to do it. This was something that Mary and Joseph didn’t fully comprehend. But for us it’s a great reminder that obeying God is to be done without delay.
Jesus’ example also shows us that the Father’s will is the most important. In John 6:38-40, Jesus states that He came to Earth to do the Father’s will. It’s easy to brush it off and say, “Well, Jesus is perfect. He’s a hard example to live up to.” But the thing is, as Christians, we’re supposed to strive to follow His example. And His example is to be obedient to the Father.
Just look at John 4:3-6. Jesus went to the well because He had a divine appointment. He didn’t tarry. He didn’t put it off for some other venture. He needed to go to Samaria and so He went. Because He obeyed God, He met the Samaritan woman, reaching not only her but many other Samaritans (John 4:28-30, 39-42).
What would happen if we displayed that kind of obedience? If we dropped everything to do God’s will?
Telling the next generation to obey God is one thing. Displaying that kind of obedience is a whole other ballgame.
