Great High Priest

All the garments worn by the Old Testament high priests were symbolic of being set apart for God’s work of atoning for sin

Jesus is our Great High Priest.  Once a year the Great High Priest was the person entrusted to go into the Most Holy Place once a year in the temple to make a sacrifice that would atone for the sins of the people and for himself for that specific year.  The law required this to be done yearly.

Aaron, brother of Moses was the first high priest appointed. From their birth, their life was consecrated to God, His Temple, and His people.  This was a holy position. All the garments worn by the Old Testament high priests were symbolic of being set apart for God’s work of atoning for sin. Only he was allowed to enter the Most Holy Place behind the veil to stand before God. Having made a sacrifice for himself and for the people, he then brought the blood into the Holy of Holies and sprinkled it on the mercy seat, God’s “throne”

In the New Testament, we are told that Jesus is the High Priest forever.

He atoned for the sin of the entire world when He bled and died on the cross.

“We have a Great High Priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.”  Hebrews 4: 14

I love this next part: “For we do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin.”  Hebrews 4: 15

So what does that mean for us now?

We can approach the throne of grace with confidence so we can receive mercy and grace to help us in our time of need.

We can access ourselves to God anytime and anywhere!  We can talk with Him all the time.
We now have a status of “right-standing” before God because of what Jesus did on the cross. He paid for all of our sins!  He died, we live. He suffered, we’re strengthened.  He took all of our sin and guilt upon Himself. Amazing isn’t it?

Thank you, Lord, for being the sacrifice.  No longer does the sacrifice, the killing of an animal have to be offered up and atoned for yearly.  Jesus paid the price, once and for all, and for all time!

Oh yes, it’s time to thank Him for what He has done. Being reminded of this makes me love Him even more! “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”  John 15: 13 Jesus laid down His life and now calls us His friends.

We are children and friends of God.
