What are you thankful for?
I’m sure every one of us would be able to think of several things we are thankful for. Oftentimes, family members will share what they are thankful for around the Thanksgiving table.
One of my favorite Psalms, Psalm 136, emphatically shares over and over again why the Psalmist is thankful. He begins his call to praise the Lord–our one true God, whose love endures forever!
The first couple of verses says it all:
“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods; His love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever.” Psalm 136: 1-3
If you are in a rough season, start thinking of God’s love that endures forever! His love will never end; it is ever-lasting.
There are few things in this life that go on forever. God’s love will never change. He doesn’t love us one day and then dislike us the next. His love is unconditional.
Let’s look at some of the reasons the Psalmist gives us reason to praise Him. This Psalm is clearly a call to praise. Take a minute and focus on what God has done and remember what He still can do.
His great love that endures forever produced this:
It All Began With Creation:
- To Him who alone does great wonders…vs. 4
- Who by His understanding made the heavens…vs 5
- Who spread out the earth upon the waters…vs 6
- Who made the great lights…vs.7
- The sun to govern the day…vs. 8
- The moon and stars to govern the night…vs. 9
It Continues With Deliverance Out Of Bondage:
- To him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt…vs 10
- And Brought Israel out from among them…vs 11
- With a mighty hand and outstretched arm…vs. 12
It Continues With Miracles:
- To Him who divided the Red Sea…vs 13
- And brought Israel through the midst of it…vs. 14
- But swept Pharoah and his army into the Red Sea…vs 15
- To Him who led His people through the desert…vs 16
It Continues With Conquests:
- Who struck down great kings…vs. 17
- And killed mighty kings…vs 18
- Sihon king of the Amorites…vs 19
- And Og king of Bashan…vs 20
- And gave their land as an inheritance…vs 21
- An inheritance to His servant Israel…vs 22
And Will Continue Throughout History All The Way Down To Us:
- To the One who remembered us in our low estate…vs 23
- And freed us from our enemies…vs. 24
- And who gives food to every creature…vs. 25
No matter what is going on in your life, never stop praising Him.
