While there are many Christians who believe that they’ve left their past behind, one of the things that the Holy Spirit told me recently has caused me to realize that what we do is bury things in our pasts as opposed to letting them go completely to the Lord.
Not too long ago, I was spending some time with the Holy Spirit in my quiet time, when all of a sudden something came up in my mind’s eye that I thought was gone a long time ago.
My initial response was, “The enemy is trying to remind me of my past”, so I immediately went to warring against it, but every time that I would close my eyes, it was like it was sitting there waiting for me the next time.
After a week of this, the Lord said to me, “Why do you keep rebuking Me, Daniel?” And I said, “Lord, how am I rebuking you?” And He said, “You keep pushing back down what I have pushing up!”
As He said this to me, I sat there dumbfounded and puzzled, “Lord, You never remind me of my past in this way, why now?” And the next thing that He said to me completely shocked me, because He said, “Daniel, if it’s in you, IT’S NOT IN YOUR PAST, IT’S IN YOUR PRESENT!”
So many Christians believe that their past is completely behind them and forgotten, but many of those things are just buried in your current life and need to be completely removed by the Holy Spirit.
While I’m not saying that the work of the Cross is in any way an unfinished work, we are a work in progress, and just as the Lord is the Author of our faith, He is also its Finisher!
So I said, “Lord, what do I do with what I’m seeing coming up in my mind’s eye every time that I spend time with You?” And He said, “Give it to Me, I’ll take it and it’ll no longer be in you!”
“I do not consider, brethren, that I have captured and made it my own [yet]; but one thing I do [it is my one aspiration]: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead,” Philippians 3:13
The word “Forgetting” here means to be “Taken completely out of your mind, or to lose”. So when it comes to your past, He wants you to lose your mind, and He gives you His as a Replacement!
As we surrender all of those things to Him that He brings to our minds, we’ll begin to see something called the “Redeeming of the Time” happen to us, because not only does He love us enough to Transform and Redeem us, He also goes to work on Redeeming everything and everyone around us as well!
“We are assured and know that [God being a partner in their labor] all things work together and are [fitting into a plan] for good to and for those who love God and are called according to [His] design and purpose.” Romans 8:28
If you feel like you always seem to be wrestling with something in your past, then maybe you need to submit it completely to Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
As I continue to hand over everything that the Holy Spirit draws to the surface that’s out of my heart, and give it to Him, those things are no longer having any effect upon my life. The memories remain, but the effects of those things are completely gone!
This is how your tests are transformed into Testimonies, your trials become trails, and your weaknesses become strengths, because He pours Himself into those cracked areas of your life, making you 100% whole!
Stop hanging on to the past things that you’ve buried deep in your soul and release them to the Holy Spirit as He reveals them to you, so that He can cast them into the Sea of Forgetfulness!
