How do you expect Jesus to show up?
That was a conversation He and I had this evening.
Jesus reminded me how often I experience disappointment because I expect Him to show up on my terms…so I miss Him showing up on His.
When Mary went to Jesus tomb she was looking for a dead body. She was desperate to find Him.
Weeping and utterly distraught, she had forgotten His promise.
She had determined that God was dead.
She decided how Jesus would show up. So much so that when He did, she couldn’t perceive Him.
Here Jesus was in all His glory…and she saw “The Gardner”.
John 20:13-15
Then they said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”
Now when she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, and did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?”
She, supposing Him to be the gardener, said to Him, “Sir, if You have carried Him away, tell me where You have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”
How many times has Jesus said…
“Heidi, why are you weeping? Don’t you see me?”
But because Jesus didn’t show up the way I thought He would…or should…I couldn’t see Him. I couldn’t see what He was doing.
John 16
Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
She turned and said to Him, “Rabboni!” (which is to say, Teacher).
Teacher.
She called Him, Teacher.
What is Jesus trying to TEACH me in the moments when He doesn’t show up the way I expected Him to?
Faith.
Faith that He is here.
Faith that He has it figured out.
Faith that His ways are higher than my ways.
Faith isn’t that He will do it the way I want. My faith needs to be in that His way is best.
Oh, Heidi…ye of little faith.
God is always doing 10,000 things in our lives. Don’t miss Him because you couldn’t see just one.
