Deliverer

He came to rescue and free us from harm or danger, and He still does.

Have you ever looked up the word deliverer?  I just did in the dictionary, and it says this, “A person who rescues you from harm or danger.”  Then it said this, “The synonyms are Rescuer, Savior, Christ, The Messiah. Needless to say, I was impressed with this definition.

When a person is in need of being delivered, they are in need of being rescued from harm or danger.

That puts a definite light on the seriousness of folks needing to be delivered.  To understand a little deeper, I went to the Psalms and found this very familiar verse:

“I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears.
They looked to Him and were radiant, And their faces were not ashamed.
This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him, And saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him And delivers them.” Psalm 34: 4-7

I love how the Psalmist says the Lord heard and delivers them.  He specifically mentions fear, which we all encounter at certain times in our life.  Fear is a real emotion, which can cripple and paralyze us.

In fact, one of the names of God is Jehovah Mephalti, the Lord My Deliverer.   “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer (Mephalti).”  Psalm 18: 2

Fear can come in many forms.  Paul was encouraging his spiritual son, Timothy, to use his God-given gift as he was experiencing some fear in stepping out.  Paul said, “I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.  For God did not give you a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power, of love and a sound mind.”  2 Timothy 1: 6-7

Yes, it was Timothy’s encouragement to be faithful.  It is ours as well.

There are some who are specifically called to deliverance ministry.  Deliverance ministry refers to freeing people from the influence of evil spirits; casting out demons in order to free others from torment, oppression, and bondage.  In the past, this type of ministry has taken a bad wrap.

Have you ever felt the presence of evil when you walked into a place?  Have you ever been oppressed with the same tormenting thought over and over?  Evil spirits are everywhere in this world and are influencing people in lots of areas in their life.  Yes, even Christians.

Paul addressed this issue in Ephesus.  He was teaching about the armor of God.  He taught, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”  Ephesians 6: 10-12

The devil has schemes to separate, divide, steal, kill and destroy.

If we are strong in the Lord we will stand in His strength, not our own.

Hold on people of God, “As it is written, there shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.”  Roman 11: 26

Jesus has come and He shall be our deliverer in any circumstance.

He came to rescue and free us from harm or danger, and He still does.  He is the same, yesterday, today, and forever.

He delivered Israel from their bondage out of Egypt, He still is delivering us from our bondage into the Promised Land.  He still has promises to deliver to us as well.  Most of us still have words and promises from God to be fulfilled.  Hold on to those words, prayers, and promises.  Jesus shall deliver them to us!

We have this promise:   “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles.”  Psalm 34: 17

Our Savior lives to save and deliver.
