Deepening Our Divine Connection: Expanding How We Experience God

While our relationship with God differs from human relationships, its impact on our lives is unparalleled.

Many of us speak of having a “personal relationship with God,” but what does that truly entail? Unlike human relationships, we can’t just meet God for coffee or send Him a quick message. This unique relationship often leaves many feeling unsure about how to connect deeply with the Creator of all (Colossians 1:16).

Cultivating Intentionality

No relationship thrives without effort. Whether it’s a new friendship that clicked instantly or a lifelong bond, each requires nurturing. The same goes for our relationship with God. It demands intentional cultivation. We need to choose to deepen our friendship with Him and set aside dedicated time for this purpose.

Yet, even when we strive to be intentional, we might struggle with sensing God’s intentionality in return. However, God’s dedication toward us is unwavering. The One who formed us in the womb (Psalm 139:13) values us immensely (Luke 12:6-7), and His calendar is always open for us.

Setting aside regular times for prayer, Bible reading, or simply enjoying His creation helps build a foundational relationship with Him.

Communicating with Our Creator

In these moments of dedicated time, how should we communicate with God? Like with any friend, communication involves sharing, confessing, and praising. We share our joys and fears through prayer, confess our shortcomings, and celebrate His glory and love. This dynamic interaction is pivotal in deepening our spiritual connection.

However, communication with God isn’t just about talking; it’s equally about listening.

Learning to Listen

While we may not hear God’s voice audibly, we can listen to Him through Scripture, one of the clearest ways God speaks to us. By reading the Bible with an open heart and mind, we discover His character and guidance. We can also actively seek His voice in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to make His presence known in our lives as promised in John 16:13-15.

Acts of Love and Sacrifice

Trust is the cornerstone of any profound relationship, built through honest communication and acts of love and service. In our divine relationship, however, the dynamic is uniquely one-sided in terms of sacrifice. Christ’s sacrifice on the cross was the ultimate act of love, forever defining our relationship with God. We cannot earn His love through our deeds; rather, our acts of service are expressions of our love for Him.

Expressing love for God can manifest in serving others, giving generously, and obeying His commands—these acts of love enrich our spiritual connection and demonstrate our commitment to Him.

A Relationship Like No Other

While our relationship with God differs from human relationships, its impact on our lives is unparalleled. By intentionally spending time with God, engaging in open communication, and expressing our love through our actions, we can cultivate a deep, fulfilling relationship with Him. This relationship is not just about what we stand to gain, but how we can respond to the overwhelming love already given to us through Christ.

Thus, as we endeavor to grow closer to God, we discover that He has always been reaching out to us with open arms, inviting us into a deeper, more meaningful relationship. Through our continued efforts to connect and communicate, we not only experience His presence more profoundly but also align more closely with His divine purpose for our lives.
