B-Attitudes (The Beatitudes 6)

We are asked to be merciful, to love mercy, for when we do, we are blessed.

Let’s jump right into our next Beatitude.  This one is my favorite.  Here it is:

“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”  Matthew 5: 7

How do we rate on a “mercy scale.”  For some, they are very good in the mercy category. Years ago, I did one of those Spiritual Gift tests, and I scored really high on mercy, too.

So being merciful for those who don’t deserve it comes naturally to those who are high with mercy.

I like how the book of James explains how mercy sown will be mercy reaped.  He says, “…Judgment without mercy will be sown to anyone who has not been merciful.  Mercy triumphs over judgment.”  James 2: 13

Let me repeat the last line so we get it:

Mercy triumphs over judgment!

That hits right where it hurts, doesn’t it?

There’s a parable in Matthew 18: 21-35 entitled “The Parable Of The Unmerciful Servant.”  Let’s take a look at it:

There was a servant who received debt forgiveness by His Master and was let go and went on his way.  This same forgiven servant had one of his fellow servants needing debt forgiveness, but he didn’t act accordingly.  He refused to help his servant and threw him in jail until he could pay it all back.  Before he sent him to prison, he grabbed him by the neck and began choking him.  I say, “Not nice!”

Well, the story continues. The servant’s Master heard what he did and called him wicked.  The unmerciful servant was now also thrown in prison and tortured by their fellow prisoners.  Then the parable ends by saying this:

This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart.”  Matthew 28: 35

When reading this, we are reminded of this general theme that Jesus teaches us often:

“Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”  One entire popular verse says it this way:

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”  Ephesians 4: 32

Yep, we are a forgiven people! We are asked to be merciful, to love mercy, for when we do, we are blessed.  Showing mercy, as Jesus does, requires the Holy Spirit of God to enable us to do so.  If we are willing, He is able.
