How do we define meekness?
One commentary defined it this way: “According to the Bible, meekness is being humble and gentle towards others and willingly being submissive and obedient to the Lord. It is not being selfish and arrogant, loud, or obnoxious. Rather, it’s having a quiet but confident trust in the Lord and being willing and able to do whatever He commands.”
Being meek is not weak.
Here’s the rest of that commentary to help us see the strength in meekness. “The meek are those who do not assert themselves over others in order to further their own agendas in their own strength, but who will nonetheless inherit the earth because they trust in God to direct the outcome of events.”
I love this definition! Yes, the meek will inherit the earth. That leads me right to our beatitude for today which is:
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Matthew 5: 5
The beauty of this word is not so much to an attitude toward man but to a disposition before God, namely, humility.
This verse was taken from Psalm 37: 11 which says, “The meek inherit the land and enjoy great peace.”
In summary, we can say that those who humbly acknowledge their dependence on the grace and goodness of God and betray no arrogance toward their fellowman are meek.
The great peace we receive is unmixed blessedness. It’s pure peace from the throne of God and undiluted! Now that’s what we call “great peace.”
Remember, God promised Abraham that his offspring would be heirs to the promise that all the peoples of the earth will be blessed through him. We, here today, are part of the “all peoples” covenant promise. The full realization of that awaits us until the return of Jesus and his Messianic Kingdom upon the earth.
In the Old Testament, it was promised that “Those who will inherit the land will receive from the Lord a secure entitlement to the promised land as the created and redeemed sphere and bountiful source of provision for the life of God’s people.” That’s what was explained in the footnotes of my Study Bible.
Only those who hope in the Lord (those who trustfully look to Him to bestow life and its blessings as a gift) will inherit the land. “For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land.” Psalm 37 9
We have an inheritance that the Lord has promised.
William Booth said this, “The greatness of the man’s power is the measure of his surrender.” Yes, being surrendered to Jesus is living a life of meekness and humility.
