I didn’t grow these pumpkins. They grew themselves.
Sometime last fall/winter, when the pumpkins we had purchased had run their course, my daughter Macy decided to do some pumpkin surgery.
This pumpkin surgery center was none other than our back patio around our fire pit.
These were pretty extensive surgeries because, at one point, I saw hammers being used, as well as a pickaxe.
We didn’t think anything of it until…
Fast forward to late spring here on the homestead. I noticed some plants popping up along the fire pit bench and thought, “huh, I wonder what that is?”
Well, folks, they were pumpkin plants. And at least two different varieties.
This was such a gift because I had attempted to plant pumpkins in our garden this past spring, and it was an epic fail.
We haven’t really tended to these at all. They even survived the 100+ temps without us watering them.
They had a strong Will to survive.
And their sheer existence has helped to solidify and build yet another layer upon the onion that is my Faith in God.
These volunteer pumpkin plants have taught me many a Gospel object lesson. And I hope to share them with you soon.
But let me just say how sweet the harvest has been— harvesting fruit we didn’t even know had been planted.
We are all planting seeds in the way we choose to live our lives. In the way we choose to show and act in love. We may not even realize it, but seeds are being sown. And some of those seeds will bring forth a bountiful, beautiful harvest. You may be around to reap the rewards, or you may not even know about it. But regardless, the seeds will be planted.
Lord, help us to live like seeds are spilling out of our mouths with every word we speak.
Like seeds are spilling out of every action our hands make.
And may they be seeds that bring forth fruit that glorifies you, Jesus.
Amen.
