What if my audience is supposed to be small –
Only these people between the floors, ceilings, and walls?
What if no others ever see what I do-
Caring for my babies the whole night through,
Wiping their tears, listening with care,
Swallowing my pride as I choose to share
My time with these little ones, serving them always,
So they will see a glimpse of the One who’s named YAHWEH.
Not for myself, not for my fame,
But for Jesus, so they might honor His name,
And see that He is the perfect caretaker,
Always available, never a forsaker.
What if my audience is supposed to be small,
Never proclaiming my sacrifices to all?
Keeping secret the moments of perseverance and pain
When I quietly whisper “Lord, help me today.”
Calling on Him for love, patience, and joy,
As I disciple the hearts of the little girl and boys.
Oh, how I can’t do all this work without Him,
Showing true love to all of these kids.
He loved me first and now I’ll love them,
So they can see His reflection when
I’m gentle and kind and tenderly love
Them when they disobey, throw tantrums, and shove.
For no one else will see how every day He helps me,
Except my husband, my children – my family.
This set of eyes, not grand, so small,
Because for Jesus alone do I give my all.
I wrote this poem because I’m daily learning that my sacrifices as a mom are unseen by most but not by God. I need to serve my family for His glory and not my own. Laying down my moments to humbly obey Him changes me in the best way and brings honor to Jesus – the only One who is worth living for.
