Stop Chasing the Urgent

Set realistic goals, keeping in mind your work schedule.

Are you chasing the urgent, running from one crisis to the next? Do you move from task to task without a plan or sit and wait for the next crisis?

Many ladies have no plan to get their housework done and no idea what they will cook for dinner. Yet we want our family and friends to feel welcome and like they can relax.

How do we relax, recharge, and refresh when the house is messy and there is nothing to eat?

Are you running around putting out fires? Does your house run you, or are you taking control? STOP! The urgent will make you sick, give you headaches, and cause fatigue. How do we change? Planning… and not just the next 10 minutes.

Realistic Plans

Your rooms, like mine, will probably never grace a magazine or be featured on TV. Instead, adjust to your circumstances. All of us possess limited time and energy.

Set realistic goals, keeping in mind your work schedule. Consider the kids and pets when determining a reasonable expectation for a family home.

Expectations

What’s the most important thing to be done in your home? I want clean clothes, bathrooms, and floors. I also want to get it done as fast and easily as possible.

I think housework is yucky, yet I love a clean and peaceful home.

When I asked my husband what he wanted, I felt shocked and embarrassed by his response. The first thing he wanted was―a Pleasant Wife. Ow! That hurt. I needed to learn housekeeping skills and improve my attitude.

My husband wanted to walk in the front door without tripping over toys. He wanted to wear clean clothes, eat the food he enjoyed, and have people over once a week for Bible study.

The last request created the biggest challenge. It meant I had to clean the house regularly!

Think about what you want to be done in your home. Learn what’s important to you and your husband, then make a plan.

Organize the Housework by Making a Plan!

  • Pick a day to do the errands
  • Plan when you’ll take care of the finances
  • Determine when to clean the main areas of the house
  • Do a load of laundry each day
  • Make an easy meal plan
  • Buy a week’s worth of groceries in one trip using your plan

With some planning, you can create more peace and calm in your home.
