3 Prayers of Blessing to Strengthen Your Friendships

In this day, where loneliness is at an all-time high, we need to rediscover the power of cheering.

Life is filled with agony and ecstasy. There are moments of horrific trials and failure and moments of victory and ecstatic celebrations. However, all of life goes better when we realize the power of community. Feeling we are in life together is a powerful strengthener.

God designed us for community. He never created us to do the journey of life alone. In this day, where loneliness is at an all-time high, we need to rediscover the power of cheering. As we cheer for each other in the game of life, we strengthen unity. One of the best ways to cheer for each other is to pray for blessings for them. Psalm 20 is a great place to go as we start doing this. When we pray for blessings, we simply ask God to bless our friends. It’s a beautiful way to honor someone and deepen your connection with them. In Psalm 20, we see 3 tangible blessings to pray for our friends.

3 Tangible Blessings For You and Your Friends

Pray for the blessing of answered prayer. David writes, “May the LORD answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you” (Psalm 20:1). I love this! I know many of my friends are asking God for specific things in their lives; wisdom, healing, direction, financial provision, the list goes on and on. One way I can encourage their hearts is to let them know I am praying blessings over them.

May God answer your prayers. May you know that your requests are being heard by almighty God who bends down to listen. May you be reassured even when you are in distress that the LORD is for you and not against you. May you see the answers to your hearts groaning soon.

Pray for the blessing of desires met. David prays, “May he give you the desire of your heart and make your plans succeed” (Psalm 20:4). Every one of my friends and yours have desires deeply buried in their hearts. Longings. Some of their desires you may be aware of, others may be buried beneath the surface of their otherwise together life. What a beautiful thing to pray a prayer of blessing over them that their desires could be granted.

May you experience the deep love and goodness of Christ through desires met. May the Lord grant even those desires that you are yet unaware of. May He plant new dreams in your heart. Dreams and desires that honor God. May the Lord bless you even in your sleep and may you know that He is creating new scenarios in which your dreams will be fulfilled. May new hope rise up within you as you anticipate the profound joy of seeing your desires come true.

Pray for the blessing of celebrating victory with them. David blesses, “May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up banners in the name of our God” (Psalm 20:5). In our world of comparison, wouldn’t it be amazing to ask God to bless us with the ability to celebrate the victories of others? How might our friendships grow and thrive if we asked God to make us great cheerleaders for others?

May you become an incredible cheerleader for others in your life. May you have eyes to see their potential and may you have faith to believe that God is at work in their life. May you celebrate every victory in your friend’s life. May you cheer wildly as they experience success. May God grant you the blessing of living your life with the richness of celebrating with others when they succeed and weeping with others when they fail. May you spend time in intercession for the victories of others. May you have the deep joy of knowing that every victory that they experience is a victory that you, too, can celebrate.

Friend, I believe as we start unleashing the power of praying blessing over others, our friendships are going to grow deeper. Our communities will begin to thrive, and we will discover the joy of living a less lonely life.
