I absolutely love sunflowers! There are some interesting facts about them that I learned.
First of all, they look like miniature suns, don’t they? Not only do sunflowers resemble miniature suns, but their blooms also follow the sun across the sky. They have their own biological clocks, which help them to follow the sun as it moves from east to west during the day, and then move back to their original position at night.
Fact #1 Sunflowers follow the light.
Fact #2 Sunflowers reposition themselves to face the sun.
Another way sunflowers intrigue me is the fact that they have a remarkable ability to absorb toxins, metals, and even radiation. That’s pretty powerful. Following nuclear disasters, scientists planted millions of sunflowers to help the land recover Similarly, they’ve also been planted in areas with high concentrations of lead.
Fact #3 Sunflowers have the ability to help clean the world.
As I see the beauty of sunflowers, I see what God wants to teach us about the importance of following the light and being a child of the light.
Let’s look at how this compares with us as Christ followers.
Here are some of the analogies:
- Spiritually, we were born to be the light of the world, the little Son’s, so to speak.
We were created to position ourselves face to face toward the Light of the World, who is Jesus.
What else can we learn?
- We have the power of the Holy Spirit within us to help bring them to the Light of the World so He can help clean them, bringing them from repentance to salvation.
- We have that call on us to share His light.
As we come to a conclusion, let’s remember what Jesus told us about being the light of the world. He said, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 15: 14-16
There are cities and nations that live in darkness. It’s time for us to let our light shine as we arise and shine. As Jesus’ followers, we are the ones who carry His presence and His light.
As little sunflowers for Jesus, position and turn towards the Light, and He will shine, reposition, clean, and transform those He points us to.
