What TV shows did you watch as a kid?

Happy Days is the first show that comes to mind from my childhood. There was Leave It to Beaver and Andy Griffith. Both came with life lessons taught in very different ways between Opie and Eddie Haskell. With my little black and white television, I huddled in my room and felt rich and fabulous to have the luxury. I enjoyed escaping reality through the stories on that little screen.

I visited Mel’s and Arnold’s diner- one had an obnoxious cook, the other great music on the jukebox. My experience is all over the place. There was Fred Sanford, Archie Bunker, and George Jefferson. I imagine all would be canceled in today’s soft culture. (Sorry kids, but yes, you’ve gotten soft). I loved the rough edges of those inappropriate and opinionated men. You know, I loved the gentle and strong women that came alongside them as well.

When I look at my marriage today, I can say without hesitation, that I married one of those rough around the edges men. I am one of the confident and quiet women. Does television shape us more than we like to admit? Perhaps. Within the black box on my dresser, I found character traits and values I chose to embrace in life.

Yet, I remember one thing. I saw wrong and recognized it in the characters I loved. Fonzi and his woman chasing, Eddie and his scheming, Fred and his attitude, even Bugs Bunny taught a lesson! Do today’s children recognize right and wrong in the shows they stare at or the YouTube videos available at their fingertips? Have we tried so hard to shape their minds by emotion and feeling, that we’ve lost sight of defining certain things in such ways?

Everything is permissible but not all things are beneficial or advantageous. All things are lawful, but not all things are constructive to character and edifying to spiritual life. (1 Corinthians 10:23)

A life lived without full acceptance of this truth has proven to fall short of peace and contentment. Life without peace within anchors today’s generations to heavy burdens and mental chaos. Mental chaos has led to self-destruction. Evil has taken full advantage of this lost generation.

Peace within is promised through Jesus Christ. May it always be His character I seek, His truth I chase, and His love I share. May anything I see or binge in this world never hold a place above Christ. I pray the next generation will seek right and wrong and accept they do exist. May they find humor and not offense, but always know better.
