What Does the Bible Say about New Mercies?

It doesn’t matter if January 1 has passed and all of your resolutions are gone. God says you get to start again.

yes, we only get one life
but we are given many chances
to live it differently – Donna Ashworth

One night a few weeks ago, I read this poem by Donna Ashworth. Although she is not a Christian, these words had such a ring of truth that I couldn’t shake the feeling. I thought to myself, what does the Bible say about new mercies?

The poem reminded me of Lamentations 3:22-23: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Each morning, every 24 hours, God says things start again. You have new mercies, new beginnings, new starts. So, it doesn’t matter if January 1 has passed and all of your resolutions are gone. God says you get to start again.

  • Do you have a sin that you are struggling with?
  • Is there a choice you wish you could undo?
  • Did you want to start something new?
  • What new habit needs tending to?

God says, we have new mercies!

Here are some verses about New Mercies I found throughout the Bible:

Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing. Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:18-19

For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. Isaiah 65:17

And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh. – Ezekiel 11:19

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. – 2 Corinthians 5:17

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. – 1 Peter 1:3

What common theme surrounds all of those verses?

Jesus Christ!

Jesus is the one mentioned in all of these verses. Our Savior brings water in the desert (John 4:14), He will restore us to a new creation (Revelation 21:1), and provides salvation.

New mercies stem from Jesus. So, cling to Jesus and know that God’s mercies come from Him.
