To the Momma Who Wants Control

They alone will come to a place of reckoning within themself.

You’ll never have control.

Sister, I get it. You want nothing more than to save your loved one. Satan found a way into their mind through addiction. He fueled that one repetitive thought and the entire brain process has changed.

Science confirms what God said long ago-

Our thoughts can destroy us. And you, momma, can’t change the thinking patterns of another human. The devil will drag down those whose thoughts don’t agree with the Word of God.

Ephesians 4:22-24 (NIV)

22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

God always knew the power of the mind would be the greatest challenge to the power of free will. Easily deceived, our senses are a target for Satan. He knew we would think ourselves into despair, destruction, and defiance.

But, He also knew there was a way out.

The Bible tells us the mind is greater than the brain’s chemistry changes. In addiction, science says that the de-regulated dopamine levels can return to pre-substance misuse levels in 90 days. To reach that place, a person fighting addiction disorder has to choose to surrender their thoughts every second of every day. There will be an internal battle in their mind that says “use, use, use” and “no, no, no.”

We encounter this scenario in any sin we battle; substance use makes it significantly more complicated. And you cannot force your loved one to begin this transformation. They alone will come to a place of reckoning within themself.

The resting place of self.

Society calls it rock bottom. The Bible provides stories of people in situations that cannot get worse (other than death). These people have felt hopeless, deep despair, embarrassment, and loneliness. God has unique grace and compassion for those who have hit rock bottom.

It’s at this place that God’s love, mercy, and redemption are its most abundant. A place where you meet your end and are emptied of pride and turn away from self, and turn to Jesus. Rock bottom is not a hard place of cemented desolation but a gentle landing where people collide with hope and find God is our life’s foundation.

Mommas, pray your loved one comes to the end of themself and discovers God there! He is always waiting.
