After Jesus calls forth Peter’s destiny as “the rock,” what does He give to him? Let’s look at it: Jesus said, “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven…” Matthew 16: 19a
What are the keys?
First, they are keys of authority and power.
Keys are the instrument used to open doors that are locked.
Other than power and authority, what was Jesus giving Peter the keys for? Glad you asked.
To unlock the door of the kingdom of heaven…
- For the gospel of the kingdom to be given first to the Jews, which we see in Acts 2: 38-39.
- For the gospel of the kingdom to be given to the Gentiles, which we see in Acts 10: 33-44.
So, how does that translate to us now, as disciples of Jesus today?
I will answer my own question by first examining what the keys signify. I already stated that the keys given are about power and authority. Yet,
Keys also give access and divine insight.
As believers, we have been given access to enter heaven. Isaiah prophesied it in Isaiah 22: 22 saying, “I will place on his (Jesus) shoulder the key to the house of David: what He opened no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.”
Jesus is the key that gives us access. We cannot enter without Him.
What about divine insight?
One commentary explained it this way:
When you access the kingdom of God with the keys He has given us, then you also unlock the wisdom and insight of God.
With this insight, you can see life from God’s perspective because this is not insight that comes from Earth but divine insight that comes from Heaven through the power of the Holy Spirit.
What can we do now with these keys?
We can use the keys to access heaven’s resources and gain insight from God’s perspective for our current earthly situations.
Access has been given. Look around…
People are locked up everywhere, looking for a way out. They need releasing and we have the keys as His Ekklesia.
Use the authority the keys give us to share the gospel and open the kingdom of heaven to them. Since Jesus has given us the keys, He expects us to use them.
I would even add we have a responsibility to use them because when you look closer, the keys are not just for us but for those around us.
As a Jesus follower, His Ekklesia, you have those keys, now go and use them.
Open the doors for those who have been locked out. Introduce Jesus to them, He said, “I am the door.” John 10: 7
He is the door (gate) through which the sheep go out and in. They go out in the name of Him (Jesus), who brings salvation to those who follow His will and guidance.
Fellow Ekklesia, let’s follow His guidance. It’s time to be intentional and unlock Heaven for others.
