The Foundation of His Kingdom

God established our foundation IN Christ, as Kingdom-minded followers.

Look at the size of this rock below.

Now move your eyes up behind it, it’s a larger mountain in the distance behind it.  As a believer, who is the rock in our life?  If you answered Jesus, then you are correct. He not only is our rock but our foundation.

Last week we talked about Kingdom Walking and Kingdom Talking; now let’s look at the Foundation of the Kingdom.  What is a foundation defined as?  A foundation is defined as “The support upon which something rests. Typically, the foundation is the lowest load-bearing part of a building.  It basically holds the weight.”

Hmmmm.  You know where I’m going with this.  Who holds our weight when we feel overwhelmed and burdened down?   Jesus does!  He is our burden bearer and carrier.  He is also our rock, the solid foundation that we need.  He not only bears the weight, but His tangible presence bears the weight of His peace.  We can feel His weight, His presence when He shows up.

When the Pharisees were trying to place a yoke of burden on the people, Jesus said, “My yoke is easy, my burden is light.”  (Matthew 11:  28-30)  The rules and legalistic law-keeping were overwhelming the people. Jesus’s yoke is easy because it is carried with repentance and faith.  Jesus actually took the weight of our sin upon Himself when He carried it to the cross.

Back to our foundation.  So what’s the purpose of a foundation?  It is to provide the structure’s stability from the ground up.  Yes, we are to be rooted and grounded in Him.

  • Being stable and grounded in Jesus provides a good foundation, a firm foundation.

He is a firm foundation.  God’s solid foundation stands firm.”  (2 Timothy 2: 19)

What would happen if a house was built without a foundation?  A building may be able to support a downward thrust of its load, for a short amount of time; but it’s the sideways motion that causes the issue.

  • Being blind-sighted by an unexpected blow can crumble us emotionally if we don’t have that solid formation when things come crashing down.

In the natural, as the ground changes temperatures with each season, it expands and contracts, causing instabilities that make the building shift.

Changing seasons in our life can cause instability if we are not supported by a firm foundation.

  • Jesus, is our Rock, our firm foundation, all else is sinking sand.

“In the beginning, you laid the foundations of the earth and the heavens are the work of your hands.”  (Psalm 102: 25)

God established our foundation IN Christ, as Kingdom-minded followers.

  • His foundation will remain as we remain in Him.
  • His love is the foundation that we base our life on.
  • The new covenant is that we “Love one another, as He has loved us.”

Agape, unconditional, love is that powerful force that covers and heals.  God is love.  Love must be the foundation that we build upon.  That’s why Jesus told us to love one another, above all else.

What does love look like?  Jesus demonstrated His love when He, “Took off His outer garment and wrapped a towel around His waist.  After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash His disciple’s feet, drying them with a towel that was wrapped around Him.”  (John 13: 4-5)

  • The act of humility showed them the full extent of His love.

Kingdom building must be built upon the foundation of humility and love.

These are the bricks that must be laid.  “We are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.”  (1 Corinthians 3: 9)

Paul speaks of laying a foundation as an expert builder.  What is that speaking of today, as we read this principle?

Paul’s foundation was laid by preaching Christ and Him crucified.  He was speaking with wisdom from the Holy Spirit when He said, “I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”  (1 Corinthians 2: 2)

His resolve was to make Jesus the sole subject of his teaching and preaching while he was with the Corinthians.

Paul stuck with the foundation to instruct and inspire as he was addressing the problems in the church. When problems arise, go to the Rock.  “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious Cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed.”  (Isaiah 28: `16)

As one in Christ, the foundation of the church is, “Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Jesus Christ Himself.”  (Ephesians 2: 20)

  • The apostles and prophets are to be part of the solid integrated structure of the church.
  • Being “as one” is part of that structure.
  • Unshakable faith is one of the bricks that the Kingdom is built upon.
  • Prayer is what strengthens all members and holds it all together.
  • Being still and knowing God is God in all circumstances is a building brick that builds us up.

KINGDOM PRINCIPLE:  “No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”  (1 Corinthians 3: 11)

Let His promises, His Word, be the brickwork that establishes and secures the foundation of who we are!
