The Deciding Factor

The drawing of the Holy Spirit draws us and draws others.

There are moments in our life that define us.  For the woman at the well with Jesus, there was a deciding/defining factor that took place.

She had come to a moment in her life to start afresh and anew.  She had to leave what she was defined as, and step out into what she was directed to.

  • The deciding factor will take you to this place.

The disciples at this moment were urging Jesus to eat.  He was still in the defining moment with the woman engaged in conversation.  “My food, said, Jesus, is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish his work.”  (John 4: 34)

  • Deciding is the first step, then we are called to finish.

There are things that we must leave, to do the will of the Father. I’m not telling anyone to leave their family or spouses.  Hear my heart.

The woman left what she was doing, and rearranged some things, to go and tell.  Her deciding factor was, “Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went to town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.  Could this be the Christ?  They came out of the town and made their way toward Him.”  (John 4: 28-30)

  • Our deciding factor can be our defining moment.
  • Our decisions in Christ will propel us to move forward and open up the way for others.
  • Our hesitations can hinder us and hold others back.

Ask God to show you the bigger picture.  He’s always got others in mind.  It’s never just about us and our decisions, even though He gives us His undivided focus.

Open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.” (John 4: 35)  This is not another call for evangelism, it’s a call to build the kingdom.

Being ripe is being ready.  Fruit isn’t picked until it’s ripe.  The time is ripe.  The word ripe defined is something that is not only ready to happen but well-suited for whatever is happening.

  • As a believer, we are well-suited with the Lord.  He’s already given us new garments.

When others are ripe, they will believe.  Look what happened to the woman.  “Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Him because of the woman’s testimony.  And because of His words many more became believers.”  (John 4: 39, 41)

  • Many will learn to hear for themselves, because of our testimony.

The drawing of the Holy Spirit draws us and draws others.  Just step out and watch God draw men to you and to Himself.

Zechariah stepped out and looked up. What did he see this time? “I see a flying scroll, thirty feet long and fifteen feet wide.”  (Zechariah 5: 2)  The angel then told him this, “This is the curse that is going out over the whole land.”  (Zechariah 5: 3)

This unusually large scroll was for all to see.  The curse was the clear message of sin to be judged, hoping to spur those back to the Lord.

The Lord had declared, “I will send it out, and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of him who swears falsely by name.”  (Zechariah 5: 4)

  • God knows the true and authentic ones.  He can’t be fooled. He sees every hidden motive.

The woman of wickedness is seen in the measuring basket as Zechariah looks up again. At first, he only sees the basket. Every time he lifts his head, he gets another picture as the angel interprets.  He is told, “This is the iniquity of the people throughout the land.  Then the lid was raised and there in the basket was a woman!  This is wickedness and he pushed her back into the basket and pushed the lead cover down over its mouth.” (Zechariah 5: 8)

  • Sin was pushed down, waiting for a location to take this basket to.

God first demonstrates his authority over evil then removes the wickedness from Jerusalem. (David Guzik)

Two more women appear with the wind in their wings, looking like a stork.  They lift the basket and carried it away, between heaven and heart.

Curious, Zechariah asks where this basket is going?  To the country of Babylonia where all the materialism and wickedness was birthed.  It was removed from Jerusalem, Israel, the land of God’s chosen people.

Deciding and defining your life in following the Lord will bring forth joy and thanksgiving into your spirit.  “Look to the Lord and His strength, seek His face always.”  (1 Chronicles 16: 11)

He remembers His covenant forever.  Out of our spirit will come, “Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.  Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name.”  (1 Chronicles 16: 28-29)

We were once lost, but now found!  One woman was found at a well, catapulted to go and tell!

(1 Chronicles 16: 7-43, Modified)
