Rescued from the Dominion of Darkness

As a believer, we are no longer under the dominion of evil (darkness), but under the rule of Jesus.

This word dominion has been before us recently.  Until now, I never saw it in this passage before.  Isn’t it amazing how the Holy Spirit will highlight something new and/or relevant for now?

This precious book, the Bible, the Word of God, is still alive and active today.  God has proven this over and over again in my life.

Paul is writing to the church in Colosse, which is in modern-day Turkey.  He is thanking God for their faith and their love in the Spirit.

Paul prays this model prayer that we can all use today.  “We have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.”  (Colossians 1: 9)

  • Pray for spiritual wisdom and understanding.  It’s better than just regular worldly wisdom.

He prays more, asking them to, “Live a life worthy of the Lord pleasing him in every way; bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might, so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of Light.”  (Colossians 1: 10-12)

Wow!  That’s a lot in just two verses; jammed pack, rich and full.

  • Those Godly living qualities are inside those who walk in the kingdom of Light–God’s Light.
  • That’s a perfect prayer to pray for someone to grow in their faith.

As a believer, we are no longer under the dominion of evil (darkness), but under the rule of Jesus, God’s Son, and God Himself.

For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”  (Colossians 1: 13)

The word “dominion” keeps being highlighted as we read.  God has established us, His children to Have dominion over…all the earth.”  (Genesis 1: 26)

When God made Adam and Eve, HIs call for His offspring was to have dominion and take dominion.  That was the call of mankind!

We are told in the Old Testament that Jesus, “Has been given dominion over the works of your hands. You have put all things under His feet.  O, Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.”  (Psalm 8: 6, 9)

  • Believers, followers of Jesus, have been rescued from the evil dominion of wickedness.
  • We are no longer under its ruling or controlling power.
  • We are under the dominion of God’s complete sovereignty.

So thankful I’ve been redeemed and rescued.

Jesus Is Supreme

There is so much in these next nine verses.  I suggest you read them through to get a deeper understanding of the Lord’s supremacy over all!  Here are some highlights of how great our Jesus is:

  • He is the firstborn of all creation.
  • For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on the earth.
  • All things were created by Him and for Him.
  • He is before all things and IN HIM all things are held together.
  • All fullness dwells in Him.
  • He made peace through His bloodshed on the cross.

Ponder His greatness!  There is no one like our Lord. He is above everything!  He is over everything!  He rules and reigns. He knows and sees all.

The Sovereign Lord

The Sovereignty of our God has ruled since creation.  We see Him in the Old and New Testaments.  To dismiss one would be dismissing the full counsel of God.  I’ve learned this:  The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed.  The New Testament is the Old Testament revealed.

God has to “Stretch out His hand against the nations because of their disobedience.”  Yet, His heart has always been to redeem.  Ezekiel prophesies against the nations as he fulfills his obedient call of the Lord.  They walked in the dominion of darkness.  Idolatry (any form of extreme admiration) is not of God.

Jesus Rescued Us From That Darkness

Isaiah continues to speak of the tender shoot of Jesus that sprouted and took root, like a root coming out of the ground.  He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.”  (Isaiah 53: 3)

  • Rejection, sorrow, and suffering; He took upon Himself.
  • All He took upon Himself, was taken from us.

Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by Him, afflicted.”  (Isaiah 53: 4)  Oh, what a Savior!
