As we begin our new series let’s look at these two very important words, rescue and restore. To rescue is “to save someone from a distressing or dangerous situation.” To restore is “to bring back or reinstate.”
If someone was in water and drowning, would we jump in to save them and/or throw a life preserver to them? Of course, we would!
So, what’s the point? Spiritually speaking, people are drowning every day in their sins and/or situations and need rescuing.
One of my favorite scriptures about rescue is, “For he (Jesus) has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. ” Colossians 1: 13-14
The apostle Paul is absolutely one who understands about being rescued.
Paul testified about his encounter with Jesus and admitted that he was one who would persecute Christians. He confessed, “In my obsession against them, I even went to foreign cities to persecute them.” Acts 26: 11
He then shared that, “On one of these journeys I was going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests. About noon…I was on the road, and I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions. We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? Then I asked, “Who are you, Lord?” I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting, the Lord replied.” Acts 26: 12-15
Here’s my favorite part of what Jesus told him: “Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen of me and what I will show you. I will RESCUE you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.” Acts 26: 16-18
As Jesus followers, we, just like Saul, (now Paul), were rescued to be rescuers.
Do we realize that we have been rescued from sin and death?
Now, we are part of the Kingdom of Light and removed from the power of Satan.
Here’s the bottom line friends:
Jesus gave his life for our sins, just as God our Father planned, in order to rescue us from this evil world in which we live.
That’s why He has told us that we are in the world, but not of it.
A rescued and redeemed life should look different than an unredeemed life.
As we close, we need to ask ourselves this question, “Does my life look different than those who are in the world?” Are my values different? If so, are others noticing?
Oh, dear folks, others are watching us and yearning to be rescued to be set free. Hand them the life preserver and show them the One who preserves and redeems all life. They may be in a dangerous or stressful situation.
Reach out and reach down, pulling them up and out.
Their cries are reaching the ears and heart of the One who rescues, redeems, and restores.
