Though it all, remember this:  “The plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations.”  (Psalm 33: 11)

Joseph’s family, who thinks he is dead, is in the midst of the famine. Jacob, his father, sends his sons ahead to get grain from Egypt.  Not knowing, of course, that “Now Joseph was now the governor of the land, the one who sold grain to all its people.”  (Genesis 42: 6)

Joseph immediately recognizes his brothers, but they do not recognize him, as they are standing before him buying grain. Joseph detains his brothers and tells them to go get their younger brother, to prove to Joseph that they are not spies coming to him with another purpose.

The brothers said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw how distressed he was when he pleaded with us for his life, but we would not listen.  That’s why this distress has come upon us.”  (Genesis 42: 21)

  • What goes around, comes around.
  • Be careful how we treat one another.

Joseph is giving them a taste of their own medicine. However, the brothers discovered when they opened their bags they said, “My silver has been returned.”  (Genesis 42: 27) Joseph gave them back their money for the grain they just bought.

  • Bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse.”  (Romans 12: 14)

The response from the brothers’ was:  “Their hearts sank and they turned to each other trembling and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”  (Genesis 42: 28)

  • The goodness of God leads a man to repentance.  (Romans 2:4)

“From heaven the Lord looks down and sees all mankind; from His dwelling place He watches all who live on the earth.  He who forms the hearts of all, who considers everything they do.”  (Psalm 33: 15)

The heart of our God took Jesus to the cross so that our hearts could be turned to Him.  If you haven’t already, give Him your heart, your life!

YOU are always on His heart. He can soften and water a heart that’s become hard.  He knows exactly what happened that makes a heart hard; for working on our hearts is His specialty.  He is definitely in the heart business. Just talk with Him, He’s the best listener I know!
