Proverbs 16: 8-16

Anything that is “above” our devotion and love for God is an idol.

Let’s continue in Proverbs, Chapter 16, and look at the next eight verses.  As we begin, let me ask a question.  What’s better, to gain much with injustice or gain little with right standing with God? Which one would you choose as better?

The correct answer is to gain little but be in right-standing with God.  Here’s how verse 8 starts our teaching:

“Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice.” Proverbs 16: 8

Here’s what it simply means:

It is wiser to have less material wealth but maintain integrity and righteousness, rather than gain wealth through unethical means.

It’s not what we have, but what has us!  Material wealth is not bad in itself, it’s how we manage it.  If we desire to be wealthy above our allegiance to God, then “it has us.”

Anything that is “above” our devotion and love for God is an idol.

How can we not let idolatry ruin our lives?  If we let God determine our steps in life, then our hearts will align with His will.

Carrying out His will on this earth is what we were created for!

In Biblical days a king functioned as God’s representative in making judgements on the cases that were brought before him.  Therefore, he needed divine wisdom to discern between right and wrong to render God’s final answer.   When the king answered he was giving a divine oracle for the people.

“The lips of a king speak as an oracle, and his mouth should not betray justice.”  Proverbs 16: 10

As God’s representatives, we are called to align our speech with the King’s, the King of kings, and Lord of lords.  His name is Jesus!

God loves justice, and fairness so should we. “Mighty King, lover of justice, you have established fairness.”   Psalm 99: 4

Here’s why:  “Kings take pleasure in honest lips; they value a man who speaks the truth.”  Proverbs 16: 13

Being honest and truthful will bring favor into our lives.

Did you know that favor from the King is like spring rain?  What’s so good about spring rain?  Glad you asked!

Spring rain is essential for the full development of crops.  It was also a sign of good things to come.

I hear the Holy Spirit saying, “Spiritual rain is essential for full development of our growth and maturity, as well.”

Here’s the scripture where all of that came from:  “When a king’s face brightens, it means life; his favor is like a rain cloud in spring.”  Proverbs 16: 15

When God releases favor upon our lives, His radiant essence is what sustains us in life.

The presence of God in our lives is His life.  Seek Him, and we receive His sustaining life in every aspect of our lives.  Then His favor is dispersed.

As we close, let’s remember the importance of God’s justice and favor over our lives.  Oh, yes, “How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver!”  Proverbs 16: 16
