Here we are about halfway through the proverbs. We’ve arrived at Proverbs 15. I love how it opens. The very first verse says this, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15: 1
There are life lessons we can learn from just this first verse.
- A gentle answer will calm the other party down if we are being screamed at.
- Two people yelling over each other will not accomplish anything.
- There is power in exhibiting gentleness.
Here’s why: Later on, in Chapter 25 of Proverbs, we hear that “…A gentle tongue can break a bone.” Proverbs 25: 15b
Yes, my friends, being gentle is not a weakness it is a strength.
Answering back gently when someone is shouting at you will turn away wrath, extreme anger, or intense annoyance.
I’ve exercised this Truth, and it works! I challenge you to try it, and you’ll see the power of Truth being activated in your life.
As we read on, we see repeated truths that are being highlighted once again.
“The house of the righteous contains great treasure, but the income of the wicked brings them trouble.” Proverbs 15: 6
Great treasure comes from being in right standing with the Lord. The treasure that is spoken about in the Hebrew context here is wealth.
When God blesses His children, He blesses their finances as well.
Our emotions of remaining calm in a heated discussion are mentioned again in Proverbs 15: 18 which says, “A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel.”
Maybe that’s why one fruit of the Spirit that’s given is self-control. God knows how we need that through life situations when confronting angry people.
May our tongue be used to bring healing and life into people as we exercise patience and calmness.
“The path of life leads upward for the wise to keep him from going down to the grave.” Proverbs 15: 24
An upward path is the direction of moving on God’s highway. Our journeys through life are to be moving forward and upward in the things of God.
If we are walking in wisdom, it will bring humility which leads to honor. “The fear of the Lord teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor.” Proverbs 15: 33
Remain humble and honor will be given to you.
