As we begin Chapter 12 of Proverbs, the first verse says this, “Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.” Proverbs 12: 1
How do you like that for being direct?
So, the question is, “Are we wise or stupid when it comes to discipline?”
To answer correctly it will depend on what age you are. Most young folks do not like discipline, at all. Even adults are not a fan of discipline, either. They see it as being limited on having fun. But truthfully, that is really not what discipline does for us. Here’s what it does for us as we recall what we have discussed earlier.
We already learned that “He who learns from instruction and correction is on the [right] path of life [and for others his example is a path toward wisdom and blessing]…” Proverbs 10: 17 a, AMP
Being disciplined will bring blessings into our lives. That’s why we shouldn’t disregard it.
Do we understand that a man who gathers wisdom will obtain favor from the Lord?
Here’s the very next verse: “A good man obtains favor from the Lord, but the Lord condemns a crafty man.” Proverbs 12: 2
Once again, I am only picking out the ones that the Holy Spirit is highlighting to me. I suggest you read the entire chapter on your own. You may get different verses that will minister to your own spirit.
Remember that we acquire honor when we walk in wisdom. Here’s why: “A man is praised according to his wisdom, but men with warped minds are despised.” Proverbs 12: 8
Since I uphold authenticity in high esteem, I like this one: “Better to be a nobody and yet have a servant than pretend to be somebody and have no food.” Proverbs 12: 9
Folks who have servants are usually in the “upper class.”
Jesus came to be a servant, so our negative thoughts on servanthood could be a little off according to the Kingdom of God’s standards.
Servants are considered to be the greatest among us.
A man who speaks with wisdom will reap a harvest from his words, just as a farmer enjoys the crops he planted.
Why? “From the fruit of his/her lips, a man/woman is filled with good things as surely as the work of his hands rewards him.” Proverbs 12: 14, Emphasis added
If you are struggling in a relationship with someone who always needs to be right, and is not listening to you, here’s what you can pray:
“The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to advice.” Proverbs 12: 15
We are called to bring healing with our tongue and our words. Words that are reckless are like a piercing sword. Soothing comforting words promote healing.
“Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:18
Being reckless does not only occur with our actions but with our speech.
As we conclude, may our actions always line up with our words. People will be drawn to the authenticity within you, as they are drawn to Jesus, who is in your heart.
