As we begin Proverbs 11, the author begins by discussing the importance of honest and dishonest scales. He says this, “The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are His delight.” Proverbs 11: 1
Back in the day, silver was weighed on scales balanced against a stone weight. These weights were used with dishonest labels for cheating.
Yes, even today, God has a strong displeasure for dishonest business dealings.
It is delightful to Him, as stated above when businesses operate honestly.
God will bless your business as you hold integrity and honesty in high regard.
“The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.” Proverbs 11: 3
If you are wondering what “duplicity” is, it is deceitfulness.
There are character traits that are bound by deceitfulness that come from the one who is completely deceitful. His name is Satan. One of his names is the Father of All Lies. He operates and thrives on bringing deceit into situations, along with pride. Always remember, “Pride goes before a fall.” Proverbs 16: 18
A similar verse in Proverbs 11 says, “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” Proverbs 11: 2
I like that humility will bring wisdom. It will also bring honor.
As I read through this chapter, I found that there are so many great statements on wisdom that we can glean from. I suggest that you read the entire chapter on your own. I will pull out some of them that the Holy Spirit highlighted for us.
Here are some of them:
- “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.” Proverbs 11: 13
Gossip can ruin someone’s reputation. Be wise about sharing prayer requests, so they don’t fall into the category of gossip.
- A kindhearted woman gains respect, but ruthless men gain only wealth.” Proverbs 11: 16
Walking in kindness will gain you respect. Respect will increase your integrity.
- “The Lord detests men of perverse heart, but He delights in those whose ways are blameless.” Proverbs 11: 20
Being innocent of wrongdoing is the same thing as being blameless. I used to think it meant sinless; but no one is sinless, except Jesus.
- “A generous man will prosper; but who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.” Proverbs 11: 25
Generosity opens the door to being blessed and refreshed. Who doesn’t want that?
Here’s the final proverb that was highlighted that’s important to who we are as Jesus-followers:
“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.” Proverbs 11: 30
Be Wise And Fruitful For It Will Increase Your Growth In God.
