Don’t you love the flower that we call the Easter Lily? Jesus identified Himself as the Lily of the Valley. He said, “I am the rose of Sharon and the lily of the valley.” Song of Solomon 2: 1
Why does Jesus compare Himself to a lily? Here are some facts that will help us see the metaphors that He is using:
- A lily is a sweet and fragrant flower, very odoriferous and strong, strong enough to change a man’s senses. “For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.” (2 Corinthians 2: 15)
- A lily is white and very beautiful with golden seeds within. Whiteness denotes the bride of Christ, holy and pure. “To her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” Revelation 19: 8
- A lily is very fruitful. One root can produce fifty bulbs or scallions. “Walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God,” Colossians 1: 10
- The lily is very tall yet hangs down its head. “Be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5: 5
As Jesus followers, we emanate the character and sweetness of Jesus everywhere we go.
When we leave a place, it honors and glorifies the Lord if we release His essence, His fragrance, His beauty, His holiness, His fruitfulness, and His humility.
So, this year on Resurrection Sunday, as you carry that lily into your home or someone else’s home, remember you are carrying Him as you enter and as you depart.
The fragrance of the Lord is within you and upon you.
“Walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” Ephesians 5: 2
