As John is testifying what he is seeing in his vision, there are seven churches being addressed by the Lord. Each church is given a commendation, a complaint, and a correction. As I read through each church listed, here are some takeaways we can learn from, on what the Spirit is saying:
- Jesus wants us to love Him first; don’t forsake our first love.
- Jesus does not tolerate idolatry.
- Jesus loves when we are faithful, not just once in a while.
- Jesus doesn’t want our faith compromised.
- Jesus wants us to remain loyal.
- Jesus doesn’t like religious deeds out of obligation. He desires relationship.
- Jesus loves when we love one another.
- Jesus loves when we are a true and faithful witness.
- Be an overcomer. He is one.
As you noticed, I paraphrased these from each of the churches He was speaking to. Yes, let us hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches.
Is God speaking to the church building? No he’s speaking to His followers, who make up the church. We, as believers, are the church!

The Spirit Speaks And Reveals
How does He speak? “The Lord has made His salvation known and revealed His righteousness to the nations. He has remembered His love and His faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the Salvation of God.” (Psalm 98: 2-3)
There are some keywords in these two scriptures. They are:
- Salvation
- Righteousness
- Love
- Faithfulness
- To all the ends of the earth
Every component listed speaks and reveals who Jesus is. When the Spirit reveals and speaks He is always leading to Jesus, never a man.

The Spirit Works Even Through Opposition
Trouble is still brewing as the wall is being built. “Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, and he became angry and was greatly incensed.” (Nehemiah 4: 1)
- If you’re carrying out the will of God, ridicule may be something you must work through.
How did Nehemiah respond to the opposition? He prayed and asked the Lord for help. He urged them, “Do not be afraid of them (opposition). Remember the Lord who is great and awesome and will fight for your brothers, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your houses.” (Nehemiah 4: 14)
- That fighting just about covers us and everyone else.
He exhorted all the workers, even in their weakness, declaring, “Our God will fight for us.” (Nehemiah 4: 20) (Shared from Nehemiah 4, Modified)
