What did the writer mean by saying, “Guard my teachings as the apple of your eye?” Proverbs 7:2b The apple of our eye is our pupil, which is cared for and protected because of its great value.
We protect our eyes so we can keep our vision clear.
If we guard these teachings like we guard and protect our eyes, we will see more clearly and spiritually.
The pupil is the black hole in the middle of our iris that lets light into our eye and adjusts its size in response to changes in light.
Simply put, the pupil controls the amount of light entering and how it responds to light.
The analogy I have is this:
We, as God’s pupils (students), are being taught His Word; and the pupil stores up those commands which will respond to the Light (Jesus).
The more we allow His Light to enter, the more we will respond because we have stored up His commands within our hearts.
The pupil is of great value to the Teacher.
All of that was released with just the first three verses, “My son, keep my commands within you.
Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.” Proverbs 7: 1-3
The rest of the chapter, which you can read on your own, speaks about being lured away with persuasive words that can lead us astray.
As we conclude, let’s hear the words of Jesus who says, “My sons, (and daughters), listen to me; pay attention to what I say…” Proverbs 7: 24
Let His Light in. His teachings are of great value and enable us to see clearer.
