We are still in Proverbs 3. Today, we will finish the chapter and read Proverbs 3: 19-35. Read out loud, let me hear you:
“By wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations,
by understanding He set the heavens in place;
by His knowledge the deeps were divided,
and the clouds let drop the dew.
My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment,
do not let them out of your sight;
they will be life for you,
an ornament to grace your neck.
Then you will go on your way in safety,
and your foot will not stumble;
when you lie down, you will not be afraid;
when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Have no fear of sudden disaster
or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked,
for the Lord will be your confidence and
will keep your foot from being snared.
Do not withhold good from those who deserve it,
when it is in your power to act.
Do not say to your neighbor,
“Come back later; I’ll give it tomorrow–
when you now have it with you.
Do not plot harm against your neighbor,
who lives trustfully near you.
Do not accuse a man for no reason–
when he has done you no harm.
Do not envy a violent man
or choose any of his ways,
for the Lord detests a perverse man
but takes the upright into his confidence.
The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked,
but He blesses the home of the righteous.
He mocks proud mockers,
but gives grace to the humble.
The wise inherit honor,
but fools He holds up to shame.” Proverbs 3: 19-35
There’s so much we can learn from this.
As we continued in this chapter, we are reminded that it was by wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations.
So, what is this indicating?
God’s work in creation is compared to the construction of a building.
The foundation is the load-bearing part of a building.
What is the Holy Spirit teaching us?
- As we build our lives, God’s wisdom will hold it up and hold it together.
- Jesus is wisdom, who is our firm foundation.
We then learn that by understanding He set the heavens in place; and by knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds sent forth rain.
I have never considered that wisdom was in creation and that understanding and knowledge were part of sending rain upon the earth.
- God opened up streams and springs, He can do the same thing in our lives as we embrace wisdom, understanding, and knowledge.
- He delights in opening up portals of blessings to us as we embrace walking in wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.
God is telling us to preserve sound judgment and discernment.
How can we do that? I found the answer in just the next chapter.
Here’s what preserving judgment looks like:
“My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to My words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body.” Proverbs 4: 20-22
- When we pay attention to what God says, we will live healthy and be preserved.
- For those who are desiring sweet sleep, or having lots of fear of sudden disasters, choose listening and obeying God’s teaching, embracing wisdom, and He will be our confidence and strength.
- Walking in God’s wisdom brings a peace deep inside that’s the peace that passes all human understanding.
- If God is urging you to bless someone, when it’s in your power to act, just act now, God will reward you for your prompt response.
As we close, remember the Lord’s blessing is on the house of the righteous.
Don’t be foolish, why?
The wise inherit honor, but fools He holds up to shame.
