Five Common Worries Christians Should Overcome

By focusing on God’s promises and His faithfulness, we can move past these worries.

As believers, we often encounter various worries that can hinder our spiritual growth and peace. Here are five common worries that we, as followers of Christ, need to overcome:

  1. Fear of Death For many, death is the ultimate fear, but for Christians, it marks the beginning of eternity with Christ. The Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 5:8, “We are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” As believers, we have the assurance of eternal life, which reframes death not as an end but as a transition to everlasting joy in the presence of Jesus. Therefore, instead of fearing death, we can embrace the promise of eternal life that outshines the temporal nature of our earthly existence.
  2. Worry Over Needs It’s natural to concern ourselves with the necessities of life, but excessive worrying can diminish our faith. Jesus Himself pointed out in Matthew 6:26, “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” This verse calls us to remember that God, who cares for the simplest creatures, will certainly provide for His children. Trusting in God’s provision frees us from the anxiety of daily needs and allows us to live in peace, knowing He is in control.
  3. Fear of Failure Failure can seem daunting, but it is often through our failures that we learn and grow the most. Like Thomas Edison, who saw thousands of unsuccessful attempts before finally inventing the light bulb, we too can use our failures as stepping stones to success. Each setback teaches us something new and brings us closer to our goals. Rather than fear failure, we can view it as a necessary part of the journey toward achievement and spiritual maturity.
  4. What We See Focusing solely on our circumstances can lead to fear and doubt. When Peter walked on water, he was fine until he took his eyes off Jesus and saw the wind and waves, leading him to sink (Matthew 14:22-33). This story teaches us the importance of keeping our focus on Christ rather than our surroundings. By fixing our eyes on Jesus, we can navigate any storm and overcome the distractions and fears that try to pull us under.
  5. Worry Over Salvation If you have truly accepted Christ, embraced His sacrifice, and confessed your sins, there is no need to doubt your salvation. Jesus assures us in John 11:25-26, “Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” Our salvation is secure in Christ, not because of our actions, but because of His grace and power to save. As Paul confidently states in 2 Timothy 1:12, “I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.”

Conclusion

These five worries—fear of death, anxiety over needs, fear of failure, distraction by circumstances, and doubt about salvation—are common but conquerable. As followers of Christ, we are called to live in faith, not fear. By focusing on God’s promises and His faithfulness, we can move past these worries and experience the full, abundant life He intends for us. Remember, with God at our side, there is nothing we cannot face.
