Yes, Jesus is the Chief Cornerstone. There is one stone that is crucial in every stone building. This stone is laid first to ensure that the building is safe and stable. This stone is the rock upon which the weight of the entire structure rests. That is one important stone!
As a follower of Jesus, He must be the foundation upon what everything else is built on.
The prophet Isaiah was speaking of Jesus in this verse, ” So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed.” Isaiah 28: 16
Throughout the Old Testament, the prophets were pointing the people of Israel to Jesus, but they rejected Him. Another scripture says, “The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.” Psalm 118: 22
This same verse is again repeated in the New Testament in 1 Peter 2: 7.
Jesus is our living stone–rejected by men but chosen by God. We also, as Christ-followers “Are like living stones being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood…” 1 Peter 2: 5
In the church, we are made alive in Christ. How? We are “fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief cornerstone. In Him, the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.” Ephesians 2: 19-22
Our foundation in Jesus is what our faith is built upon. Jesus is the rock of our salvation.
Since we are built together in Him as a dwelling in which God lives; we then should be eager to be joined together with one another in His building, the building of His Kingdom.
A strong house is built upon the foundation that is laid upon the rock. When the floodwaters and storms come, it will stand firm because it was well-built. A house of God that is well built on the strong foundation of Christ, with the apostles and prophets, it will stand when opposition comes.
Being built in Him together with the indwelling Holy Spirit as our guide will build His Kingdom.
The only way a structure can survive is if it is built properly from the ground up. A firm foundation is necessary.
We must be rooted and grounded in Jesus to grow and build.
As I am writing this I am reminded that I get to serve in a church that has the name Cornerstone, where Jesus is our Chief Cornerstone.
