Bread of Life

Jesus equated Himself with an essential for life when He named Himself the Bread of Life.

Are you one who loves bread?  I know I do!  Give me a loaf of bread with my spaghetti so I can soak up the sauce with my bread and clean my plate.  Yum!  My Dad always wanted a piece of bread after his meal too, “Clean his teeth.”   I think it was an excuse to just eat more.

Spiritually, Jesus has told us He is the bread of life.  Maybe my hunger for bread is really a yearning for Jesus.  Here’s why:  “The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”  John 6: 33

Those from the crowd asked Jesus to, “Give us that bread every day.” Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.”  John 6: 35

What was Jesus indicating?

He wanted to show the people who He is, not just what He did.

Remember, right before this Jesus had just fed 5000 + people with five loaves of bread and two fish.  Then that night He walks on the water.  We see that it was a full day of releasing miracles!  What can all this mean?

Jesus wanted the people to come to Him for eternal life by believing in Him.

He delighted in releasing the miracle of feeding them, but He desired them to seek Him as their daily bread, to be sustained by Him.

Bread and water were the miracles performed that day.  Isn’t it interesting that bread and water are considered staple foods, basic dietary items?  People can survive for a long time on bread and water. In fact, bread is a necessary item in the Passover meal in Jewish culture. Water is what we need to survive in life.  Without it, we can’t live!

Jesus walked on the water as a storm was approaching.  The disciples were afraid in their navigating during the storm, but, as soon as they saw Him they, “Let him in the boat, and immediately they arrived at their destination.” John 6: 21

We need the Bread of Life and the Living Water to help us reach our destination in Him.

Jesus equated Himself with an essential for life when He named Himself the Bread of Life.  When He was teaching the disciples on another occasion, how to pray, He said, “...Give us this day our daily bread.”  Mathew 6: 11

Jesus is our daily bread!

He is essential for life, here on the earth, and ultimately in heaven.  I can’t imagine life without Him.  He is my daily nourishment, that has fed and sustained me through every circumstance in life.

There is no life without Him; for He is all nourishment for all existence.

Taste And See That The Lord Is Good.
