Well, we have arrived at Proverbs 2. Today, let’s read the entire chapter and make some progress. Here we go, out loud, again: Proverbs 2: 1-22:
“My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding,
and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as hidden treasure,
THEN you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom,
and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He holds victory in store for the upright,
He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
for He guards the course of the just
and protects the way of His faithful ones.
Then you will understand what is right and just
and fair–every good path.
For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul,
Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.
Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men,
from men whose words are perverse,
who leave the straight paths
to walk in dark ways,
who delight in wrong doing
and rejoice in the perverseness of evil,
whose paths are crooked
and who are devious in their ways.
It will save you also from the adulteress,
from the wayward wife with her seductive words,
who has left the partner of her youth
and ignored the covenant she made before God.
For her house leads down to death
and her paths to the spirits of the dead.
None will go to her return
or attain the paths of life.
Thus, you will walk in the ways of good men
and keep to the paths of the righteous.
For the upright will live in the land,
and the blameless will remain in it;
but the wicked will be cut off from the land
and the unfaithful will be torn from it.” Proverbs 2: 1-27
Wow! That was a mouthful! Let’s break it down.
Did you notice the first four verses had the words, “If you…?” That’s I-F you, nothing else!
Here are some of the phrases the Psalmist uses:
“If you accept my words…”
“If you call out for insight…”
“If you look for it…and search for it…”
THEN…you will understand the fear of the Lord.
There are conditions seen here. The phrase, “If you…” indicates a polite request. But more importantly…
He is leading us to see the rewards of obedience.
What I see in those phrases are:
Accept, call out, and search for Him, you will find Him, and He shall lead you.
Just as there are consequences for bad behavior, there are rewards for right (righteous) behavior.
One of the benefits of walking in wisdom is we are saved from the ways of those who are wicked, but also from the deceitfulness of their speech.
Crooked paths will not lead us home, to our heavenly home. They will lead us astray, wandering and without purpose.
God has a purpose, a path for us to walk on, that leads us on the correct road.
Learn to let the Bible be your roadmap through life. It will light our way. “This command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life.” Proverbs 6: 23
Yes, correction and instruction go hand in hand. God promises to hold our hand along the way.
He says, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” Psalm 32: 8
If our way seems unsure, we just ask God and He will counsel us and guide us along our journey. He is our Gentle Shepherd who leads and guides His sheep.
He is eager to lead and guide us on a specific path. Here’s how specific He gets:
“Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it,’ whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.” Isaiah 30: 21
I have a book marker that says,
The will of God will never lead you to where the grace of God cannot keep you.
He will use others to help us. Learn to walk in the ways of good men/women and you’ll be shown the right path. You won’t need to walk in anyone else’s footsteps, but His.
The upright will follow His ways, and His steps, which will become our steps as we walk together.
