Begin Again – The Fruit of Gentleness

Gentleness is a spiritual weapon that disarms the enemy.

I love the Fruit of Gentleness. Gentle people are so pleasant to be around.  They don’t exhibit harshness, rudeness, or even aggressiveness.  These kinds of negative behaviors usually push people away from us and do not represent Jesus well.

The apostle Paul was giving final instructions to Timothy, his spiritual son, saying, “Pursue righteousness and a Godly life, along with faith, love perseverance and gentleness.”  1 Timothy 6: 11b

Before Paul gives Timothy these final instructions, he says, “You, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things.”  1 Timothy 6: 11a

Gentleness is a character of a Godly man

Look how gentle Jesus was!  We often associate gentleness with the female gender, but strong men of God are gentle and kind too.  There is an authority that is released when Paul appealed to the Corinthian believers when he professed, “Now I, Paul, appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ–though I realize you think I am timid in person and bold only when I write from far away.” 2 Corinthians 10: 1

He was being slandered by some folks wishing to discredit his ministry by saying he was bold at a distance while writing his letters but weak and indecisive in person.  So, his approach in the meekness and gentleness of Jesus was his desire to cancel out all the accusations that were coming against him.

Point to be made:  Authority and assertiveness can be relesed in gentleness.

Yelling and screaming do not reveal boldness.  It fuels an angry person.  This is why we read:

“A gentle answer turns away wrath; but a harsh word stirs up anger.”  Proverbs 15: 1

Don’t fall into the enemy’s ugly trap.  He loves to stir people up and cause fights.

Gentleness is a spiritual weapon that disarms the enemy.  The fruit of gentleness does not need to be hidden.  In fact, it needs to be evident to all. “Let your gentleness be evident to all.  The Lord is near.”  Philippians 4: 5

Gentleness is Christ-like consideration for others.

It is essential in leadership.  This quality paves the way for many to come and flourish in the things of God.

Gentleness is considered something of beauty that doesn’t fade away nor disappear. “Beauty should not come from an outside adornment…Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”  1 Peter 3: 3-4

As with all the fruits, the Spirit of gentleness lasts and doesn’t fade from the Spirit of God.
